Weather radar
The ‘BoXPol’ (Bonn XBand Polarimetric) weather radar at Auf dem Hügel 16 in Bonn is permanently out of service.
BoXPol was put into service in 2008. At the time, the system was purchased with funds from the Collaborative Research Centre TR32, which was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). After the Collaborative Research Centre came to an end in 2018, the weather radar continued to operate intermittently until the beginning of March 2023. Unfortunately, an important component of the system then failed and can no longer be repaired.
We are currently working on research proposals to enable the acquisition of a new radar system. Until this is successful, the radar, which is popular far beyond the scientific community, will unfortunately not be available. We thank you for your understanding and will inform you here as soon as there is any news.
The weather radar JuXPol (Juelich XBand Polarimetric) is out of service for similar reasons.
